1982 NFL
A 57-day-long players' strike reduced the 1982 season from a 16-game schedule per team to an abbreviated nine game schedule. Because of the shortened season, the NFL adopted a special 16-team playoff tournament; division standings were ignored (although each division except the NFC West sent at least two teams to the playoffs, and the NFC Central sent four of five). Eight teams from each conference were seeded 1–8 based on their regular season records. Two teams qualified for the playoffs despite losing records. Before the season, a verdict was handed down against the league in the trial brought by the Oakland Raiders and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum back in 1980. The jury ruled that the NFL violated antitrust laws when it declined to approve the proposed move by the team from Oakland to Los Angeles. Thus, the league was forced to let the officially renamed Los Angeles Raiders play in Los Angeles. In the first round of the AFC Playoffs, the Jets beat the Bengals 44-17, the Raiders beat the Browns 27-10, the Chargers beat the Steelers 31-28, and the Dolphins beat the Patriots 28-13. In the NFC, the Packers beat the Cardinals 41-16, the Cowboys beat the Buccaneers 30-17, the Vikings beat the Falcons 30-24, and the Redskins beat the Lions 31-7. In the second round of the AFC Playoffs, the Jets beat the Raiders 17-14 and the Dolphins exercised some revenge from last season's playoff loss to the Chargers 34-13. In the NFC, the Cowboys rolled over Green Bay 37-26, while the Redskins did the same against the Vikings 21-7. In the conference championship games, the Dolphins would win a defensive struggle in the mud and rain against the Jets 14-0 in the AFC, while the Redskins would prevail over the Cowboys 31-17, setting up the match-ups for super Bowl XVII. The Redskins defeated the Dolphins by the score of 27–17 to win their first Super Bowl. The game was played on January 30, 1983 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The Redskins scored 17 unanswered points in the second half and gained a Super Bowl record 276 yards on the ground, while holding the Dolphins to just 47 offensive plays for 176 total yards, 76 of which came on a single play. Nevertheless, Miami built a 17–10 halftime lead with Jimmy Cefalo's 76-yard touchdown catch and Fulton Walker's 98-yard kick off return. The turning point in the game came with 10:10 remaining: facing fourth down and 1-yard to go at the Dolphins' 43-yard line, and trailing 17–13, Washington running back John Riggins broke through the Miami defense and ran into the end zone for a touchdown to take the lead. Wide receiver Charlie Brown then added an insurance touchdown with his 6-yard scoring reception. Riggins was named Super Bowl MVP. He finished the game with 2 Super Bowl records: the most rushing yards in a Super Bowl game (166), and the most rushing attempts (38).
