1920 APFA
Welcome to the 1920 American Professional Football Association, the predecessor to the National Football League, which would officially begin in 1922, and beginning of organized professional football in the United States. In reality, the 1920 APFA season was a very disorganized professional football league. There were no uniform schedules, which means that most of the teams played a different number of games. It was just a bunch of guys trying to play as many games as they could. But, it was the beginning. One of the teams, the Canton Bulldogs, had Jim Thorpe on their team. He is considered the greatest athlete of the 20th century. And it was the year of the Akron Pros. They boasted the most complete and balanced team in the league that year. It was a very different game back then, as teams ran the ball about 76% of the time. Typically, teams would only throw about ten times a game. It wouldn't really change that much until the mid-1930's. But, it was the beginning.
