1975 WFL
1975 was the last of two seasons for the World Football League. Due to financial difficulties, there were many changes that occurred before and during the 1975 season. The Birmingham Americans would fold, receive new ownership, and become the Birmingham Vulcans. The Chicago Fire would receive new ownership and become the Chicago Winds. The Jacksonville Sharks would receive new ownership and become the Jacksonville Express. The Portland Storm would receive new ownership and become the Portland Thunder. The Florida Blazers would receive new ownership and move to San Antonio to become the San Antonio Wings. The Chicago Winds would fold after only five games, thus leaving the league with eleven teams. On a positive note, Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick, and Paul Warfield would leave the Miami Dolphins after the 1974 NFL season, and join the Memphis Southmen. On the field, it was a very competitive league, with almost the entire league being separated by 4 1/2 games. The Birmingham Vulcans would wind up on top at 9-3, with the Memphis Southmen close behind at 7-4. The Vulcans would beat the Southmen both times they played, giving them
their 1 1/2 game lead in the Eastern Division.  The rest of the league was bunched together, and the Southern California Sun (7-5) would beat out the San Antonio Wings (7-6) by a half game in the Western Division. As a result of the ongoing financial problems of the league, the WFL would shut down after week twelve, and not complete its 20 game schedule. Consequently, there were no division winners and no playoffs. The season would end with the Vulcans having the best record at 9-3, but officially, there was no WFL champion.
