1933 NFL
Due to the success of the 1932 NFL Playoff Game, the league divided its teams into two divisions for the first time, with the winners of each division playing in a championship game to determine the NFL champion. Three new teams also joined the league: the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Cincinnati Reds. Also, the Boston Braves changed their name to the Boston Redskins and the Staten Island Stapletons left the league. To increase the number of field goals and decrease the number of tie games, the goal posts were moved from the end lines at the back of the end zones to the goal lines. In 1933, it was really only a battle of the two powerhouses: the New York Giants and the Chicago Bears. The Giants won Eastern divsion with an 11-3-0 record, with the Brooklyn Dodgers a distant second at 5-4-1. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears finished the season at 10-2-1, and their closest rivals were the Portsmouth Spartans who also finished a distant second, at 6-5-0. The 1933 NFL Championship game was held on December 17, 1933 at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The attendance was estimated at 26,000. This was the first scheduled championship
game since the NFL's founding in 1920. The Bears scored the winning touchdown with less than two minutes to go in the fourth quarter, capping a 23–21 victory over the New York Giants. It was the Bears' second consecutive championship and third overall NFL title under George Halas.
