1948 NFL
During the 1948 season, halfback Fred Gehrke painted horns on the Los Angeles Rams' helmets, making the first modern helmet emblem in pro football. 1948 also featured the highest per-game, per-team scoring in NFL history, with the average team scoring 23.2 points per game. This record stood for 65 years until 2013. In 1948, the best team in the NFL was the Philadelphia Eagles. They featured a potent offense and a stingy defense, which produced an average margin of victory of 18.3 points per game. In the Eastern Division, the Eagles and the Washington Redskins were neck and neck for most of the season. The teams played each other twice, with the Eagles easily winning both games 45-0 and 42-21. The Eagles would go on to win the division by 2.5 games. In the Western Division, it was the battle of Chicago. The Cardinals and Bears would be virtually tied all season, and would go into the final week with identical 10-1 records. A record crowd of 51,283 packed Wrigley Field on December 12 to watch the Cardinals and Bears play for the division title. The Bears would lead early in the game 21-10, but the Cardinals would rally and win the game 24-21 to win the Western Division title and the trip to the Championship Game. The NFL Championship Game would be a very low scoring event with Philadelphia coming out on top 7-0, to capture the 1948 NFL Championship.
