1979 NFL
In 1979, the Pittsburgh Steelers repeated as champions by defeating Los Angeles Rams, becoming the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls twice. Division winners in the AFC were Miami in the East, Pittsburgh in the Central, and San Diego in the West. The two Wild-Card teams were Houston and Denver. In the NFC, it was Dallas in the East Tampa Bay in the Central, and Los Angeles in the West. The two Wild-Card teams were Philadelphia and Chicago. In the Wild-Card games, the Oilers beat the Broncos 13-7 in the AFC, and the Eagles beat the Bears 27-17 in the NFC. In the AFC Divisional Playoffs, the Oilers, playing without starting quarterback Dan Pastorini, receiver Ken Burrough, and running back Earl Campbell due to injuries, could only generate 259 yards compared to San Diego's 385. But they still won the game, largely due to the effort of rookie safety Vernon Perry, who set a playoff record with 4 interceptions as the Oilers defeated the Chargers 17–14. In the other AFC game, the Steelers rolled over the Dolphins, scoring 20 unanswered points in the first quarter, and coasting to a 34-14 win. In the NFC, the Buccaneers continued their miraculous turnaround by defeating the Eagles 24-17 to win their first playoff game in the team's short history. In the other game, the Rams used a late fourth quarter comeback to score the winning touchdown with 2:19 left on the clock, and hold on for a 21-19 win over the Cowboys. In the conference championship games, the Steelers took care of the Oilers 27-13, while the Rams won a tight defensive battle with the Buccaneers 9-0, setting up the match-ups for Super Bowl XIV. The Steelers defeated the Rams by the score of 31–19, becoming the first team to win four Super Bowls in six years, as well as the first to win more than two. The game was played on January 20, 1980, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, and was attended by a Super Bowl record 103,985 spectators. Super Bowl XIV was a close game during the first three quarters. The Rams led 13–10 at halftime before Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw connected with wide receiver
Lynn Swann on a 47-yard touchdown pass. Los Angeles regained the lead on a halfback option play with running back Lawrence McCutcheon's 24-yard touchdown pass to Ron Smith. But Pittsburgh controlled the fourth quarter, scoring 14 unanswered points with Bradshaw's 73-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver John Stallworth, and running back Franco Harris' 1-yard touchdown run. Despite throwing three interceptions, Bradshaw was named Super Bowl MVP by completing 14 of 21 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns.
