1980 CFL
1980 was a very competitive season for the Canadian Football League, as all but one team won at least 6 games. Most of the teams were bunched together with the exception of the Edmonton Eskimos, who finished with a sparkling 13-3-0 record, behind the exceptional play of quarterback Warren Moon. The Eskimos would finish with a comfortable 3-game lead over the second place Winnipeg Blue Bombers (10-6-0). Over in the Eastern Conference, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-7-1) would win the division by one-half game over the second place Montreal Alouettes (8-8-0). In the first round of the playoffs, it was Montreal over the Ottawa Rough Riders 25-21, while Winnipeg would roll over the Calgary Stampeders 32-14. In the Division Finals, it was the Hamilton Tiger-Cats taking care of the Montreal Alouettes 24-13, while the Edmonton Eskimos would roll past the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 34-24, setting up the match-ups for the 68th Grey Cup Championship. The 68th Grey Cup was played on November 23, 1980, before 54,661 fans at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto. The Edmonton Eskimos defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 48–10 in one of the most lopsided victories in Grey Cup history. Warren Moon completed 21 of 33 passes and was named player of the game. “I showed some people that there is another quarterback in the West besides Dieter Brock,” Moon said of the Winnipeg quarterback who won the Schenley Award earlier in the week. “We finished first. We won the Grey Cup. That proves Im a good quarterback, too.” The Eskimos had to battle to put away Brocks 10-6 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 34-24 to make their fourth trip to the Grey Cup in four seasons under head coach Hugh Campbell. Defensive lineman Dave Fennell said the three-in-a-row and the 48-10 score should silence people. “We had a lot of people criticize us for not playing to our potential,” he said. “I think we played to our potential.”In total, 21 Grey Cup records were established or extended and five more equaled in the game in which the Eskimos produced 31 first downs and 606 yards of offense. Warren Moon passed for 398 yards. Tommy Scott caught 12 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns to tie Ross Craig (1913), Red Storey (1938) and Jackie Parker (1956) with the record for most majors in a game. Brian Kelly caught a 75-yard pass and Danny Buggs a 55-yarder. The Tiger-Cats didnt score a touchdown. All Hamiltons points were produced by kicker Bernie Ruoff. Press box voters paid off the Eskimos defense by awarding linebacker Dale Potter with Defensive Player of the Game as well as Most Valuable Canadian honours.
