1938 CFL
In 1938, Canadian Football consisted of 3 separate leagues, which only competed within its own league during the regular season. Each league would have teams that would qualify for the post-season, and the right to compete for the 26th Grey Cup Championship. This included the IRFU (Interprovincial Rugby Football Union), the ORFU (Ontario Rugby Football Union), and the WIFU (Western Interprovincial Football Union). On the field, It was the Calgary Bronks and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers finishing an identical 6-2 records on top of the WIFU. The Ottawa Rough Riders and the Toronto Argonauts would also finished tied with identical 5-1 records on top of the IRFU. And the Sarnia Imperials along with the Montreal Nationals would finish tied atop the ORFU with identical 3-1-2 records. In the first round of the playoffs, it was the Toronto Argonauts winning a two game total point victory over the Ottawa Rough Riders 9-1 and 5-3 for a total of 14-4. The Sarnia Imperials would win a two game total point victory over the Montreal Nationals 9-5 and 15-0 for a total of 24-5. And the Winnipeg Blue Bombers would shut out the Regina Roughriders 13-0. In the Semi-Finals, the Toronto Argonauts would roll past the Sarnia Imperials 25-8, and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers would win a two game total point victory over the Calgary Bronks 12-7 and 13-2 for a total of 25-9, setting up the match-up for the 26th Grey Cup Championship. The 26th Grey Cup was played on December 10, 1938, before 18,778 fans at Varsity Stadium at Toronto. Toronto won convincingly as they routed Winnipeg 30-7. Toronto trailed 7-6 in the final quarter when little known Red Story came off the bench. He would score three touchdowns in 15 minutes to seal the win. For three quarters it was a slugfest, with not a lot of results on the scoreboard. Storey came into the game and ran a touchdown for 28 yards, he intercepted a pass and ran it in for 40 yards, he took a lateral from Bob Isbister and ran another 102 yards to the Winnipeg 5 yard line, paving the way for a third touchdown, and only a few plays later, ran it in from 12 yards out for the final score of the game.
