2018 GFL
The 2018 GFL season was very competitive, as five teams won 11 or more games. In the North, three teams: the New Yorker Lions, the Dresden Monarchs, and the Berlin Rebels all won 11 games, and in the South, the Schwabisch Unicorns had a perfect 14-0 season. The top four teams in each division qualify for the playoffs. In the North it was the Lions, Monarchs, Rebels, and the Cologne Crocodiles, and in the South it was the Unicorns, the Frankfurt Universe, the Allgau Comets, and the Munich Cowboys. In the first round of the playoffs, it was the Lions over the Cowboys 59-14, the Unicorns over the Crocodiles 37-14, the Monarchs over the Comets 51-19, and the Universe winning a battle of defense 6-5 over the Rebels. In the Semi-Finals, it was the Universe over the Lions 20-17, in overtime, and the Unicorns over the Monarchs 23-7, setting up the match-up for the 2018 German Bowl Championship Game. The German Bowl took place on October 13, 2018 in the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark in Berlin. The first quarter of the game was led by Frankfurt. Andreas Betza managed a touchdown run for Universe early in the game, but the subsequent extra point was blocked. Only a little later they scored the next touchdown, this time with a successful extra point. At the beginning of the second quarter, the Unicorns finally scored their first touchdown, which sealed the half-time score of 13-7 for Frankfurt. Errors on both sides prevented further points from being scored in the third quarter. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Frankfurt had several chances to extend their lead, but the kicker missed a possible field goal from 39 yards and later from 23 yards. In the middle of the fourth quarter, Schwäbisch Hall scored their second touchdown and took the lead for the first time. The Unicorns were able to expand on this later when they managed to carry a fumble back for a touchdown from Frankfurt quarterback Andrew Eiffers. Frankfurt managed to score another touchdown and change the score to 19-21. However, the subsequent two-point conversion was unsuccessful. The Universe then executed an onside kick and was able to capture it. They were able to work their way forward, but their kicker missed the winning field goal with three seconds remaining.
