2015 NFL
In 2015, division winners in the AFC were New England in the East, Cincinnati in the North, Houston in the South, and Denver in the West, with the Wild-Cards going to Kansas City and Pittsburgh. In the NFC, it was Washington in the East, Minnesota in the North, Carolina in the South, and Arizona in the West, with the Wild-Cards going to Green Bay and Seattle. In the AFC Wild-Card Playoffs, it was the Steelers over the Bengals 18-16, while the Chiefs hammered the Texans 30-0. In the NFC, it was the Packers over the Redskins 35-18, while the Seahawks squeaked by the Vikings 10-9 on a missed 27-yard field goal with time running out. In the AFC Divisional Playoffs, it was the Patriots over the Chiefs 27-20, while the Broncos took care of the Steelers 23-16. In the NFC, the Panthers built a 31-0 halftime lead, and held on to defeat the Seahawks 31-24, while the Cardinals would need overtime to beat the Packers 26-20. In the Conference Championship Games, the Panthers crushed the Cardinals 49-15, while the Broncos beat the Patriots, who failed to tie the game on a 2-point conversion in the final minutes of the game, 20-18, setting up the match-up for Super Bowl 50. The game was played on February 7, 2016, at Levi's Stadium in the San Francisco Bay Area at Santa Clara, California. As this was the 50th Super Bowl, the league emphasized the "golden anniversary" with various gold-themed initiatives, as well as temporarily suspending the tradition of naming each Super Bowl game with Roman numerals (under which the game would have been known as "Super Bowl L"), so that the logo could prominently feature the Arabic numerals 50. The Denver Broncos defeated the NFC Champion Carolina Panthers 24–10 to earn their third Super Bowl title. The Broncos used a dominating defense to take an early lead in Super Bowl 50 and never trailed. Newton was limited by Denver's defense, which sacked him seven times and forced him into three turnovers, including a fumble which they recovered for a touchdown. Denver linebacker Von Miller was named Super Bowl MVP, recording five solo tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. As a result, through the first 50 years of Super Bowl competition, the NFC leads the AFC 26-24 in Super Bowl wins.
