The league expanded the regular season from a 14-game schedule to 16. Furthermore, the playoff format was expanded from 8 teams to 10 teams by adding another wild card from each conference. The wild card teams would play each other with the winner advancing to the playoff round of eight teams. With the start of a 16-game season also marked the start of a new scheduling format that saw a division in one conference play a division in another conference, rotating every season and repeating the process every three years. Previously, teams played random opponents in the other conference. Division winners in the AFC were New England in the East, Pittsburgh in the Central, and Denver in the  West. The two Wild-Card teams were Miami and Houston. In the NFC, it was Dallas in the East, Minnesota in the Central, and Los Angeles in the West, The two Wild-Card teams were Atlanta and Philadelphia. In the Wild-Card games, it was Houston 17-9 over Miami in the AFC, and Atlanta 14-13 over Philadelphia in the NFC. In the AFC Divisional Playoffs, Houston went on the road and won 31-14 over New England, while Pittsburgh rolled over Denver 33-10. In the NFC Divisional Playoffs, the Cowboys trailed 20–13 at halftime, then scored 14 unanswered points in the second half to turn the game around and win 27-20 over the Falcons. Meanwhile, the Rams had no such trouble with the Vikings, as they crushed Minnesota 34-10.  In the conference championship games, the Steelers hammered the Oilers 34-5, while the Cowboys would shut out the Rams 28-0, setting up the match-up for Super Bowl XIII. The Steelers defeated the Cowboys by the score of 35–31. The game was played on January 21, 1979, at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, the fifth and last time that the Super Bowl was played in that stadium. Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw, who was named Super Bowl MVP, completed 17 out of 30 passes for Super Bowl records of 318 passing yards and 4 touchdown passes. Bradshaw eclipsed Bart Starr's Super Bowl record for passing yards in the first half with 253 yards in the air as the Steelers led 21–14 at intermission. His 75-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter also tied Johnny Unitas in Super Bowl V for the longest pass in a Super Bowl. The Cowboys were able to stay close, only trailing 21–17 at the end of the third quarter, but Pittsburgh scored two touchdowns in a span of 19 seconds in the fourth period. Dallas also could not overcome turnovers, drops, and a controversial penalty during the second half. The Cowboys were eventually able to score two touchdowns in the final minutes of the game, but still ended up being the first defending champion to lose in the Super Bowl and the first losing Super Bowl team to score 30 points or more.
